Connect Power BI
AI Insights queries Power BI semantic models via the XMLA endpoint and writes DAX automatically.
Requirements
- Power BI Premium (P/EM SKU) or Premium Per User (PPU) — XMLA endpoints are gated to these.
- An Azure AD service principal with Build permission on the dataset.
Connection fields
| Field | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| XMLA Endpoint | Power BI Service → Workspace → Settings → Premium → Workspace Connection |
| Tenant ID | Azure Active Directory → Overview |
| Client ID | App Registration → Overview |
| Client Secret | App Registration → Certificates & secrets |
Walkthrough
- Add Datasource → Power BI.
- Paste the XMLA endpoint (e.g.
powerbi://api.powerbi.com/v1.0/myorg/Sales). - Enter the Tenant ID, Client ID, and Client Secret.
- Test & Load Fields — tables and measures in the model appear.
How DAX generation works
When you ask "Total sales by region last quarter", the agent writes:
EVALUATE
SUMMARIZECOLUMNS(
'Region'[Region],
FILTER(ALL('Date'), 'Date'[Quarter] = "Q4"),
"Total Sales", SUM('Sales'[Amount])
)
You see the DAX, the rows, and a chart — three views of one answer.
